Using the app

How do I add a year?

On the main screen, tap + Add a year. Pick the year on the wheel, then enter gross pay, take-home (net) pay, or both. Each can be per year or per month. For monthly amounts, choose how many payments you get a year (12, 13 or 14). The card always shows the yearly total.

I know my monthly take-home pay but my yearly gross. Can I enter both?

Yes. Gross and net each have their own Per year / Per month switch, so you can enter yearly gross from your contract and monthly take-home from your payslip.

I have more than one income in a year.

Tap + Add another income on the card, for example for a second job or a bonus. They're added up for the year.

How do I see a card in full, or change it?

Tap the card to show it in full, then tap Edit to change it. Tap it again, or start scrolling, to put it back in the stack.

How do I make a report?

Press and hold a card, then drag it into the Reporting Frame. Or tap Select and tap the years you want. Add two or more years, tap Create report, check the figures, and the report appears. From there you can save it or export a PDF. Both ask you to sign in first, so the report is kept in your account, and then show a short ad.

Why is a card marked "Net missing" or "left out of reports"?

A report compares the same kind of pay across years: take-home with take-home, or gross with gross. If a year only has one of them, it's left out of reports based on the other. Add the missing figure to include it.

Can I keep separate wallets, for example for another country?

Yes: Settings → Wallets → + Add a wallet. Each wallet has its own country, currency and inflation figures.

How reports are calculated

Where do the inflation figures come from?

Each country's consumer price index, as an annual average: from the World Bank's World Development Indicators, and for some countries from the national statistics office (for example the US Bureau of Labor Statistics). Each report and PDF lists the rate and source for every year it uses.

There's no figure for this year yet. What can I do?

Official figures for a year are published after it ends. Until then, open this year's card and enter your own estimate, with its source (for example a statistics office's latest estimate). Reports use it and show its source, and it's replaced automatically when the official figure is published.

How is the raise I need worked out?

First the app works out how much prices rose between your earliest and latest year. Then it works out the pay you'd need now to buy what your earliest year's pay bought. If you compare take-home pay and also entered gross pay, it works out how much of each extra euro of gross reached your take-home pay in your own years, and from that the gross raise needed. The PDF shows every step with your numbers.

What does "paid to the state" mean?

Gross pay minus take-home pay minus any pension and voluntary deductions you enter, as an amount and as a share of gross pay. It's shown when every year in the report has both gross and take-home pay.

Is this tax or financial advice?

No. Pay Power compares the figures you enter with official inflation figures. It doesn't calculate tax and doesn't check your figures.

Countries

My country isn't listed, or has no inflation figures yet.

We add countries as reliable annual figures become available. Email support@hillgaars.com with the country, and if you know it, the national statistics office that publishes its consumer price index.

Your data and account

Do I need an account?

Not to add years and see reports: without an account, everything stays on your phone, encrypted. Saving a report or exporting a PDF asks you to sign in with Apple or Google, so the report is kept in your account. You can also sign in at any time (Settings → Account) to keep your cards when you change or lose your phone.

I have a new phone. How do I get my cards back?

If you were signed in on the old phone, install Pay Power on the new one and sign in with the same Apple or Google account. Your cards aren't included in iPhone backups, so without an account they can't be moved.

How do I delete my data?

Signed in: Settings → Delete account and data. You'll be asked to sign in once more to confirm. This deletes your account, everything in it, and the data on the phone. Without an account: Settings → Delete all data on this phone. You can also delete single cards, reports or wallets.

Who can see my salary figures?

Only you. They're never shared with advertisers or anyone else. See the privacy policy.

The PDF didn't open or share.

Tap Export PDF again and choose where to save or send it from the share sheet, for example Save to Files or Mail. If it still doesn't work, email us with your iPhone model and iOS version.
